Up in Stocksbridge, High Green and the higher parts of Chapeltown, winter arrives earlier and stays longer than it does down in the city. That changes what a boiler service is for. In north Sheffield it is not just an annual box to tick. It is the job that gets your boiler ready for the cold months.
In short: we service boilers across north Sheffield, mainly S35 and S36, for £80 including VAT. That covers our 14-point Gas Safe inspection with the certificate issued on the day, and appointments are usually available the next day.
I'm Adam from Eco Heat Surge. Our base in Tankersley is just up the M1, so north Sheffield is part of our regular area.
Where we cover in Sheffield
We cover the north of the city, the area around Junctions 35, 35a and 36 of the M1: Chapeltown, High Green, Burncross, Mortomley, Ecclesfield, Grenoside, Stocksbridge and Wharncliffe Side. If you are further into Sheffield, ring before you book and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
The price
£80 including VAT for a combi or system boiler, with nothing added for travel. Landlords can add the CP12 on the same visit for £150 in total per property, or book the CP12 alone for £70, or £60 a property across two to four lets.
A winter-ready checklist for north Sheffield homes
This is the order we would suggest working through it, starting in late summer. Some of it you can do yourself, and some needs an engineer.
| When | What to do | Who |
|---|---|---|
| August to September | Book the annual service before the autumn rush | You |
| At the service | Combustion, gas pressure, safety devices and condensate trap checked | Us |
| At the service | Condensate pipe route and fall inspected | Us |
| Early October | Run the heating for an hour to make sure every radiator warms | You |
| Early October | Bleed any radiator that is cold at the top | You |
| Before the first frost | Check any outdoor condensate pipe is lagged | You |
| All winter | Keep an eye on the pressure gauge, around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold | You |
Plenty of January breakdowns give a warning in one of those rows months earlier.
The condensate pipe: north Sheffield's most common winter breakdown
Every modern condensing boiler produces water as it runs. That water drains away through a thin plastic pipe, and when the pipe runs outside along a cold wall, it can freeze. Once it is blocked with ice, the water has nowhere to go, so the boiler locks out and shows a fault code.
On higher, exposed ground like Stocksbridge and Wharncliffe Side, this happens more often than almost anywhere else we cover. Things that make it more likely:
- A long outdoor run before the pipe reaches a drain.
- A thin pipe. Industry guidance is for any outdoor section to be wider than the indoor pipe, because a narrow pipe freezes solid faster.
- No lagging on the outdoor section.
- Too little fall, so water sits in the pipe instead of draining away.
- An exposed, north-facing wall that never sees the sun in winter.
At the service we trace the pipe from the boiler to where it drains and tell you if any of those apply. Some are a quick fix, such as lagging the outdoor section. Others, like rerouting the pipe indoors, are a bigger job we would price separately.
If it has already frozen, do not keep resetting the boiler. Our guide to getting a frozen condensate pipe flowing again shows the safe way to thaw it with warm water.
Signs your boiler is struggling with the cold
Many north Sheffield homes have solid walls and lose heat quickly, so the boiler runs for long stretches through the winter. That is hard on the fan, pump and heat exchanger. Before a part fails completely, there are often warning signs:
- The house takes noticeably longer to warm up than it did last winter.
- The pressure gauge keeps dropping and you are topping it up more often.
- Radiators at the back of the house, often in later extensions, stay cooler than the rest.
- New noises: rumbling, whistling or a pump that sounds louder than it used to.
Tell us about any of these when you book. The readings we take at the service often show whether the problem is the boiler or the system around it. If your boiler is one of the budget models fitted on the newer High Green estates and is approaching its tenth year, it is also worth reading our post on the signs it might be time for a new boiler.
What the 14 points cover
The checklist starts at the flue, with an analyser reading to confirm clean combustion, then moves to the gas pressures at the inlet and burner, the seals, the flue and the terminal outside. Inside the casing, the heat exchanger is cleaned and the burner, fan and condensate trap are checked. Finally we test the relief valve, the expansion vessel, your controls and for carbon monoxide. A proper service takes 60 to 90 minutes.
Any fault gets explained on the spot and priced in writing, and you decide whether we go ahead. Small adjustments are included. The yearly certificate also keeps most manufacturer warranties valid.
Carbon monoxide is the reason a service should never be skipped. You cannot see or smell it, and the NHS lists the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be mistaken for flu.

Frequently asked questions
Which parts of Sheffield do you service boilers in?
Our Sheffield work is in the north of the city, mainly S35 and S36, around Junctions 35, 35a and 36 of the M1. That covers Chapeltown, High Green, Burncross, Mortomley, Ecclesfield, Grenoside, Stocksbridge and Wharncliffe Side. Elsewhere in Sheffield, call first and we will say plainly if you are in range.
How much is a boiler service in north Sheffield?
North Sheffield customers pay a flat £80 with VAT for a combi or system boiler, with no travel charge. The price includes our full 14-point Gas Safe inspection and a certificate before we leave. Landlords can add the gas safety certificate on the same visit for £150 in total per property.
Why does my boiler keep freezing up in Stocksbridge?
A frozen condensate pipe is the usual culprit. Up on the higher, exposed ground, the slim plastic pipe that carries water away from a condensing boiler can ice up where it runs outdoors, and the boiler then shuts down. On a service we check the pipe's route, fall and protection.
How long does a boiler service take?
Allow 60 to 90 minutes. A proper service includes a flue gas analysis, gas pressure checks, cleaning the heat exchanger and testing the safety devices, so it should not be rushed. You get your service certificate before we leave, and we explain anything we have found.
