Boiler Service in Doncaster: Price and Booking Guide

If you live in Doncaster and you have found us online, you have probably noticed that we are based in Tankersley, near Barnsley. So the fair question is: why book a boiler service with a firm 40 to 50 minutes up the road? This guide answers that honestly, including the situations where we are not the right choice for you.

The short version: a boiler service with us in Doncaster costs £80 including VAT, the same as in Barnsley. It covers our 14-point Gas Safe inspection, the certificate is issued before we leave, and visits are usually arranged within 48 hours of your call.

I'm Adam, and along with Danny I run Eco Heat Surge.

When we are a good fit for Doncaster, and when we are not

Servicing is planned work. You choose the date, we turn up at the agreed time, and the distance makes no difference to the job itself. That is why Doncaster suits us for servicing, landlord certificates, installs and upgrades.

Emergencies are a different story. Because of the drive, we do not offer same-day emergency callouts in DN, and we would rather say that now than let you down on a freezing night. Here is how it breaks down:

Your situationAre we a good fit?
Annual service, booked a few days aheadYes
Service and CP12 for a rented propertyYes
Boiler running but you want it checked before winterYes
No heating or hot water and you need someone todayProbably not. Ring us and we will tell you honestly, or recommend someone closer
Gas smell or carbon monoxide alarmCall 0800 111 999 first, before any engineer

The point of a yearly service is to make that emergency row less likely in the first place. Most breakdowns we are called to have a cause that was building for months.

What it costs

JobPrice
Annual service, combi or system boiler£80 inc. VAT
Service with a landlord CP12, one property£150
CP12 only, one property£70
CP12 for two to four properties£60 each

There is no travel charge on top. For a breakdown of where the £80 goes, and why a much cheaper service often means a much shorter one, see our post on what a boiler service costs. It is written about Barnsley but the numbers are the same in DN. Everything else we charge is on the pricing page.

If your Doncaster home still has a tank in the loft

A lot of older Doncaster houses still run a heat-only boiler. Instead of a combi heating water on demand, the boiler heats a hot water cylinder, usually in an airing cupboard, and the system is topped up from a small feed and expansion tank in the loft. If you have a cylinder and a tank, that is almost certainly what you have.

We service these boilers with the same care as any modern combi, but there are a few things worth knowing about the system around them.

  • The loft tank does a job. It keeps the heating system topped up and gives it somewhere to expand into as it warms. If it is missing a lid, or the water in it looks rusty or sludgy, mention it when you book.
  • The cylinder has its own controls. A cylinder thermostat and usually a motorised valve decide when the boiler heats your water. If hot water runs out quickly or takes ages to recover, the fault is as likely to be there as in the boiler.
  • The pump is often separate. On older systems the pump sits outside the boiler, often in the airing cupboard. A pump that hums, rattles or runs hot is worth pointing out to us.
  • Sludge is common. Open-vented systems take in a little fresh water and air over the years, which can mean more sludge in the radiators. Cold spots at the bottom of radiators are the usual clue, and our guide to a radiator cold at the top or bottom explains what each pattern means.

If you have been thinking about switching to a combi, the service visit is a good time to raise it. We will give you a straight answer. In bigger households, a modern system boiler with a cylinder can still be the better choice, because a combi can only heat so much water at once. Our comparison of combi and system boilers sets out the trade-offs.

What happens on the day

We follow the same 14-point checklist in Doncaster as everywhere else. The analyser goes in the flue first, to show the boiler is burning cleanly. Then come the gas pressures, the casing comes off so the internal parts can be cleaned and inspected, and every safety device is tested before we sign anything. Allow 60 to 90 minutes.

Before we leave you get the certificate and a plain explanation of anything we noticed. Where a repair is needed, you get the cost in writing first and nothing goes ahead unless you say so. Small adjustments made with the casing already off are included in the £80.

The water across much of DN is hard, so on a combi we pay particular attention to the hot water side, where scale builds up first. Weaker hot water, or a boiler that sounds noisier than it used to, are early signs worth mentioning.

Why booking early matters more in Doncaster

Because our Doncaster diary is planned ahead, the time of year makes a bigger difference here than it does closer to home.

  • April to September: the widest choice of dates. This is the best time to book.
  • October: the first cold week brings a rush of calls, so book at the start of the month.
  • November to March: breakdowns closer to our base come first, so routine servicing in DN is slotted in around them.

Warranty and safety

Most manufacturers need an annual service to keep the warranty valid, and the certificate we give you is your proof. The Health and Safety Executive's advice on gas safety at home explains why any gas appliance should be checked regularly by a registered engineer.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a boiler service cost in Doncaster?

A Doncaster boiler service is £80, VAT included, for a combi or system boiler. It is exactly what we charge in Barnsley, because the extra miles never appear on your bill. Landlords can have the CP12 certificate done during the same visit, which brings the total to £150 per property.

How quickly can you service a boiler in Doncaster?

Expect an appointment within 48 hours of calling in most cases. We book DN work ahead rather than taking it on the day, so ringing early in spring or summer gets you the widest pick of slots. Mexborough and Conisbrough are the parts of Doncaster we reach most easily.

Do you do emergency boiler repairs in Doncaster?

We do not promise same-day emergency callouts in Doncaster, because our base is 40 to 50 minutes away and we would rather not over-promise. If your boiler breaks down, ring us anyway. If we cannot reach you quickly enough, we will say so and suggest a firm nearer to you.

Can you service an older boiler with a loft tank?

Yes. Many older Doncaster homes still use a heat-only boiler fed from a loft tank, with a separate hot water cylinder, and we give those exactly the same care as a new combi. If you are weighing up a switch to a combi, raise it during the service and we will talk it through.
